How we score Clarius PAL HD3
AZNO's editorial feature-and-portability score is 6.5/10, with 80% assessed rubric coverage. It describes the named configuration, not clinical image quality, diagnostic accuracy, reliability or value for money.
| Criterion | Weight | Grade / 10 | Weighted points | Evidence for this configuration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Supplied imaging formats | 20% | 8.0 | 1.60 | Phased and linear arrays in one head. Manufacturer source |
| Imaging and Doppler functions | 25% | 6.0 | 1.50 | Base B, M, color/power; optional PW not included in the reviewed entitlement. Manufacturer source |
| Processing and smart tools | 20% | Unassessed | Excluded | Unassessed for this basic configuration; paid tools shown on the product page do not establish base entitlement. Manufacturer source |
| Indicative scanning runtime | 20% | 6.0 | 1.20 | Approximately 60 min scanning; recommended maximum examination time 20 min. No independent endurance test. Manufacturer source |
| Probe-only weight | 15% | 6.0 | 0.90 | 307 g scanner; host excluded. Manufacturer source |

Calculation, not a mystery number
Score = sum of assessed weighted points ÷ assessed weight. For this review: 5.20 ÷ 0.80 = 6.5/10 after final rounding. Missing criteria receive neither zero nor an invented neutral grade; they are excluded and the coverage is disclosed.
Partial evidence — read the unassessed criteria before comparing totals. A score can move substantially when missing kit specifications are confirmed. Coverage is the percentage of rubric weight assessed, not a probability of accuracy.
Shared grading anchors
The same five weights and thresholds apply to all ten reviews. A higher feature score is not automatically the right device for a specialist's workflow.
- Supplied imaging formats · 20%
- 5: one format; 8: two; 10: linear, convex and phased. Optional unpurchased heads do not count. A focused specialist is not necessarily a worse purchase.
- Imaging and Doppler functions · 25%
- 6: documented B/2D, M and color; 8: those functions plus PW; 10: PW plus CW/TDI. Unverified kit entitlements remain unassessed. This measures function breadth, not image quality.
- Processing and smart tools · 20%
- 7: documented harmonic, compound or advanced image processing; 10: documented automated measurement or guidance in the reviewed entitlement. Unknown tools are unassessed, not absent. This does not score algorithm accuracy.
- Indicative scanning runtime · 20%
- 5: below 60 min; 6: 60–89; 7: 90–119; 8: 120–179; 9: 180–239; 10: 240+ min. Use the conservative end of a range; an up-to figure remains a maximum. Host-powered and probe-powered scenarios are not equivalent tests.
- Probe-only weight · 15%
- 10: ≤150 g; 9: >150–200; 8: >200–250; 7: >250–300; 6: >300–350; 5: >350–400; 4: >400 g. Do not substitute display/system weight for probe-only weight.
How to compare: match intended examinations, included probes, software entitlement and host first. Compare ready-to-scan package cost separately. Runtime claims use different workloads; probe-only weight excludes displays/accessories. Small numerical differences are not demonstrated clinical performance differences.
Unified on October 13, 2026: this shared rubric replaces the two earlier batch methods. Recalculated totals may differ from earlier versions. Prices, customer anecdotes and unverified electrical draw do not enter the numerical score.
What are you buying?
The Clarius PAL HD3 deserves a shortlist when a clinician regularly moves between deep and superficial examinations. It combines phased and linear arrays on one scanner head, with wireless operation. That arrangement is its clearest practical attraction: fewer hardware changes between different views. This is a documentation-based buying review, with no hands-on testing or measured performance score. Availability is limited to selected regions. Clarius PAL product page

Documented specifications
Clarius specifies a 1–15 MHz frequency range, maximum imaging depth of 40 cm, a 90-degree phased-array field of view and 29 mm linear field of view. Published dimensions are 148 × 76 × 32 mm and weight is 307 g. There are two programmable buttons. Standard imaging includes B-mode, M-mode and color/power Doppler. The integrated battery is rated at approximately 60 minutes of scanning, with approximately 90 minutes to charge; the recommended maximum examination time is 20 minutes. Compatibility and software
The current U.S. store lists iOS 16+ and Android 13+, while the main product page still gives older minimum versions. Confirm the exact phone or tablet and app version before purchase rather than relying on either operating-system label alone. Current U.S. listing
Clarius Essentials is optional for basic scanner operation. It adds functions including pulsed-wave Doppler, advanced software, education, cloud exam management and DICOM connectivity. Model and regional restrictions apply. The manufacturer says an expired subscription removes access to the associated services and advanced tools, so a workflow built around them needs a continuing entitlement. Image quality and user evidence
The specifications support considering PAL for a broad mix of examinations. They do not establish equal performance at every depth or prove superiority over another handheld. Maximum depth is especially easy to overread: it is not a promise that every target will be adequately resolved at that setting.
A useful demonstration should include the intended cardiac views, shallow vessel imaging and any procedural work on representative patients. Compare near-field detail, penetration, motion, Doppler behavior and controls on the same display. Request exported clips as well as a live scan, because a polished still image cannot show the entire acquisition experience.
Positive social-media comments
On 19 May 2026, Reddit u/Nismo4x4 reported trying PAL HD3 and finding it useful for POCUS and procedural work. This is a self-reported trial, with host and app version unspecified. Public PAL comment

Negative social-media comments
On 9 May 2024, the same account said their group had PAL HD3 but expressed a less favorable impression without giving a technical reason. These are one person's views at different times, not two independent reviews. Praise for the L15 in that discussion must not be assigned to PAL. Earlier PAL discussion
RUF's anonymous owner feedback praises voice controls but raises off-center-array handling, heat and abdominal-image concerns. Individual dates and app versions are unspecified. Disadvantages, limitations and tradeoffs
The main purchasing risks are software-dependent workflow costs, phone compatibility and battery planning. Wireless convenience still leaves two charged devices to manage. A service doing long scanning sessions should demonstrate its complete charging and cooling arrangement before ordering. A narrowly specialized practice should also test whether a dedicated probe better fits its routine examinations; versatility alone does not settle that choice.
Approximate price and what it covers
On 13 October 2026, the U.S. store displayed $5,395 USD for the scanner, plus optional Essentials at $695 annually, $1,785 for three years, or $2,500 one-time. Scanner plus the annual option therefore starts at $6,090 before applicable extras. A charger and three-year standard warranty are listed. Budget separately for a compatible display device, taxes, shipping, optional accessories and service requirements. These are U.S. reference prices, not an AZNO quotation or international offer. Comparison at a glance
The buying decision should follow a representative demo and a written package specification. PAL looks most relevant when its combined arrays solve a frequent workflow problem and the chosen software entitlement covers the department's actual needs.
- PAL: phased and linear arrays in one head; the appeal is changing examination type without changing hardware.
- A single-purpose probe: compare it when most work is concentrated in one anatomy or procedure.
- A modular system: compare the complete set of required heads and the practical cost of exchanging them.
Care and support
Request the current reprocessing instructions, approved cleaning products, battery-service route and software support horizon for the exact regional model. Do not infer disinfectant compatibility from a wireless design.
